El TechumbreMen walk past "El Techumbre" at Desayunador Salesiano Padre Chava, a shelter and soup kitchen in Tijuana, Mexico. The large improvised tent, built recently to add space for beds as Tijuana sees more migrants and refugees from West Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, is called that because it resembles the shape of a steeply peaked roof.
Never Forget“Never Forget,” an installation by Tlingit and Unangax̂ artist Nicholas Galanin at Desert X 2021, a biennial display of art installations meant to be seen by the public in the desert and urban areas of the Coachella Valley of Southern California. The installation, which is nearly 60 feet tall and 360 feet wide, echoes the famed “Hollywood” sign, which originally spelled out “Hollywoodland.” It is meant not only as an acknowledgement that both the art and the viewer are on land originally settled by indigenous people, but also on the historical misrepresentation of indigenous people in American cinema. “Never Forget” is displayed at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, on land historically settled by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.

Operation Shelter to Home, a multi-agency response to the coronavirus pandemic, moved homeless individuals from shelters and the streets into the convention center, in order to contain the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 and provide services to them.
Closing TimeLast night at The Caliph, a neighborhood karaoke/piano/dive bar that was one of the first to serve San Diego’s LGBTQ community. The bar first opened in 1960, almost a decade before Stonewall, providing a place for mostly closeted, mostly white, mostly male patrons to gather. Times changed and so did The Caliph’s clientele, but eventually the development of the Bankers Hill neighborhood would spell the demise for the building. The entire block will be replaced with a high-rise residential tower.
